3 Easy To Follow Tips to Start Reducing Credit Card Debt

Last updated: Feb 17, 2010

1. Add up your total debt, write it on a couple of pieces of paper and stick it in prominent places where you will see it everyday. Your computer screen, refrigerator, bathroom mirror, and steering wheel are all good places. Seeing the figure every day will help you face the reality of the debt. It will also motivate you to pay out your credit card debt and encourage you to consider the necessity of purchases before you make them in future.

2. Apply for a balance transfer credit card and pay off as much as possible during the low introductory rate term. Do not add new purchases to this card, if you think you will not be able to avoid using your credit card, keep your old card. Use the old card and then make sure you pay out the balance when it is due. This card should be used in an emergency only. You must remember that you will not get out of debt while you continue to accumulate it.

3. Pay more than the minimum: You must pay more than the minimum repayment each month. Too many people struggle with credit card debt longer than they have to because they only make the minimum repayments each month. While this may sound like the easy way out, in the long run it costs much more due to interest charges. Even an extra $10 a month will make a difference.
